Jericoacoara’s kite spots and surroundings, ideal conditions for the most experienced kitesurfers.

Jericoacoara … this beautiful native-sounding, cooing word already evokes thoughts of a fascinating haven waiting to be discovered. When you arrive there, these expectations will be more than fulfilled!

A small fishing village lost in the dunes, Jericoacoara has over time become a “must” of the Nordeste beaches for travellers wishing to truly discover the region.

As a central point for watersports in Brazil kitesurfing enthusiasts discovered their paradise on the beaches of Ceara, they also took a liking to the majestic atmosphere and décor of “Jeri” and the spots with powerful winds that surround it. From Icaraizinho 130 kilometers south to Barra Grande, a beach stage of the 2014 World Championship (PKRA) to the north, dream spots are dotted in between and the power of the wind is amplified!

ICARAIZINHO, A VERSATILE SPOT

Located on the shoreline 220 km northwest of Fortaleza, Icaraizinho de Amontada is still a small fishing village that has not changed much over time.

Apart from the installation of some second homes and the pousadas of kitesurfers, this is where wind turbines furnish the landscape and life continues to follow its course to the throbbing rhythm of the sunny days. Every morning, the fishermen leave on the ocean and return at night with the fruits of their labor.

Uncrowded, this excellent kite spot halfway between the capital of Ceara and Jericoacoara is ideal for those wishing to enjoy a 100% kitesurfing stay in a stunning setting.

The Vila Mango pousada, located at the end of the beach a little bit away from the village, is a perfect position to start your day of kiting, it is also one of the most beautiful addresses in the region. It offers comfortable accommodation with bungalows overlooking the sea. In the evening most go to bed early in order to wake up early and go kitesurfing.

KITESURF IN ICARAIZINHO

The village of Icarai faces a bay that offers very versatile conditions but is dominated by a powerful wind. Flat fans will be delighted with calm, flat waters that lend themselves to free style at low tide.

The advantage of this spot is that it can also produce waves depending on the tide and the wind allowing you to surf beautiful walls of water. By taking off a bit and going upwind, you can also enjoy the surroundings and scenery taking care however, as there is wind hole in front of the village.

For a kitesurfing holiday in Brazil, if you are looking for a cocktail combining flat and surf where tranquillity is the key, choose Icarizinho.

ILHA DO GUAJIRU, A FLAT SPOT TO KITE BETWEEN LAGOONS AND MANGROVES

Between coconut plantations and mangroves with dozens of water bodies, Ilha de Guajiru offers lush scenery that offers an extremely different surrounding to other kitesurf spots in Ceara with mineral landscapes and low vegetation of the Restinga and Caatinga type.

220 km from Fortaleza airport and 55 km from Icaraizinho, this little village, still unknown only a few years ago, has become a popular kite surfing destination on the road to Jericoacoara, 90km away.

Some time ago, apart from a relatively small pousada, there was nothing here but the neighboring village of Itarema. Little by little, word of mouth has done its work and now there are various accommodation options. In the evening, the concentration of kite surfers has brought a laid back little nightlife and there are even a few evening events.

We recommend the Pura Vida simple but with good value for money. For travelers looking for a change of scenery and exoticism, the Guajiru Kite Safari pousada offers accommodation in rooms made of large tents sheltered under palm roofs, in a safari style.

KITESURFING IN ILHA DO GUAJIRU

The spot of Ilha do Guajiru is especially famous for its lagoon on the edge of the mangrove formed between the beach and a vast sandbar. With this land configuration, the site is perfect for flat and is very popular with fans of still water and “free” style.

Depending on the winds, you can also go out of the lagoon and go kiting in the middle of the mangrove, an extraordinary experience!

It is also possible to take transport and get dropped south of Itarema to make a nice downwind trip that will take you to the mouth of the river to finish with a little free style on the Ilha de Guajiru site.

JERICOACOARA, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES IN THE WORLD

Jericoacoara, small village of a few sandy streets nestled in the heart of a natural park and surrounded by giant dunes is the most sought after destination of Ceara and often considered as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Today, there is a wide range of accommodation ranging from very simple inns to establishments that combine charm with local decor and modern comforts such as the Hurricane or the Vila Kalango that we love. Not to mention the latest and very select, Essenza. Numerous restaurants serving local and international cuisine and a few different nightspots also allow you to thoroughly enjoy your evenings without routine for longer stays. The main attraction of “Jeri”, besides these beaches, are its vast lukewarm, calm and transparent rainwater lagoons that are reachable by buggy.

A destination that offers more possibilities than most others in the region, it is an ideal choice to end a kitesurfing holiday in Nordeste or to travel to with your family

KITESURFING IN JERICOACOARA: THE SPOTS OF PREA AND GURIU

The main beach of the village can be sheltered from the winds, so it is not the ideal spot for kitesurfing, however the kilometers of coastline which extend to and from it as far as the eye can see, are perfect for lovers of powerful winds. To the south-east is the spot at the village of Préa, and a few kilometers after the cliffs, that of Guriu which is in the north-west.

A good option may be to stay in Jericoacoara and to alternate between Prea and Guriu, you will need to take transport to get to these spots. (Vila Kalango offers a free shuttle to Prea for its customers).

You can also do a downwind from Prea to Jericoacoara, the ideal way being to get a buggy at the end of the beach at Prea before the rocky outcrop. Indeed if you want to continue to Jericoacoara, you will need to go around the cliffs and the entrance to the bay where there is little wind, it is not easy and you will also have to pass among the wind surfers, who dominate this area. However, if successful you will be rewarded with an exquisite downwind trip, during which you can ride along the beach surfing small waves and enjoying the beautiful landscape!

PREA, THE DOWNWIND SPOT

Here we are on the most famous Kitesurf spot of Jericoacoara. Prea is a fishing village located 7km before Jericoacoara. There are several accommodation options including the cozy and comfortable Rancho do Peixe which has a kite surf school and where you can also rent good quality equipment. (It is an extension of Vila Kalango)

If you are a fan of flat, this spot will not necessarily seem ideal because the wind is quite powerful and there are no waves, if you are a beginner, the spot is also not ideal between August and October as the wind can reach 30 knots (the kite season in Ceara is June to December). If you are fond of strong wind and you like to jump though, why not?

GURIU, THE FLAT SPOT OF JERI

Guriu is a small village with no good accommodation, but it is a good option for those who like the still water and free style thanks to the mouth of the river. But beware the wind is strong and requires some experience. About 15 minutes by buggy to the ferry, once off the ferry, you will cross a forest of mangroves and arrive at the spot.

BARRA GRANDE, THE 2014 KITE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SPOT

Barra Grande is a must for experienced kiters. Amongst beautiful natural scenery with palms and coconut trees swaying in the wind, this village is definitely worth seeing.

Stage of the PKRA World Championship in 2014, the small fishing village has seen in recent years its pousada offering grow with more than 30 establishments today.

Many who arrived to practice their favorite sport fell in love with the place and settled, forming a friendly little community of kite fans. We recommend accommodation at Barra Grande Kite Camp, an excellent beachfront pousada built of local materials with beautiful bungalows and all services dedicated to Kitesurfing.

KITESURF AT BARRA GRANDE

A beautiful spot for versatile kiting where you will find flat water at low tide and waves at high tide along the beach. But that’s not all, because the mangrove and its vast estuary nearby offers a superb area of flat to cater for all tastes amongst the serenity!

At 2h30 / 3h drive from Jericoacoara, the village is very quiet and the wind still very strong especially in October.
